The historic fenland city of Ely is the second smallest city in England. The imposing cathedral is one of England’s most beautiful and largest, known locally as ‘the Ship of the Fens’, it is famous for its unique Octagon Tower, which when lit can be seen for tens of miles. The cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to stained glass. If its history you’re interested in, then Ely Museum, housed in the city’s old gaol, is an excellent place to start. Ely’s most famous historical resident was Oliver Cromwell, and you can visit the Cromwell Family’s former house. Thursday is market day, and has a range of stalls, and at the attractive waterside you can take a boat trip along the Great River Ouse or explore the art gallery and the region’s largest antique centre.
